Having complete control over your domains is something really necessary and being able to access and edit the DNS records for any of them is among the things you should look for when you search for a registration or a website hosting provider. You may have heard about the so-called “name servers” that show where a domain is hosted, but below them you will find a whole set of records, for example the A record, which is the IP address of the server hosting the website, and the MX records, which show the server that manages the e-mails for a specific domain. These records are used if you wish to have your site with one provider and the e-mails with another, for instance. You may also use a domain address for a non-website service or direct the traffic to it through special records. Many companies ask for an extra payment to give access to edit certain DNS records besides the name servers.
